We're going to spend the next hour exploring the world of the broadside ballad - the penny songsheets that flooded the streets of England during the 17th century, roughly between the time of Elizabeth I and William and Mary - and which acted both as the pop songs and the tabloid press their day.

William Warner (? - 9 March ) was an English poet. Warner, born in London or Yorkshire, studied at Oxford, and was an attorney in London. In he published a collection of 7 tales in prose entitled Pan his Syrinx, and in a translation of the Menæchmi of Plautus. His chief work was Albion's England, published in in 13 books of syllabled verse, and republished with 3.   A. W. Moore () published his Manx Ballads and Music in after much delay. Its introductory material, together with manuscripts held at the Manx National Heritage Library, allow an insight into how the work was shaped and how when completed it did not altogether match Moore's original intention.

They tell all kinds of stories, including histories, legends, fairy tales, animal fables, jokes, and tales of outlaws and star-crossed lovers. ("Ballad" is a term also used in the recording industry for slow, romantic songs, but these should not be confused with traditional or folk.
